The role of a family law trainee solicitor is both challenging and rewarding, requiring a deep understanding of legal principles, empathy, and the ability to handle sensitive situations. Family law involves a diverse and often demanding mix of tasks. You are exposed to cases that range from divorce and care proceedings to financial settlements and domestic abuse. Your day-to-day work varies depending on the specific tasks at hand, and requires a combination of legal knowledge, empathy, and strong organisational skills.

Transitioning from a paralegal to a trainee solicitor is a journey of professional growth, skills development, and learning how the legal industry works.

My Day-to-Day Work as a Family Law Trainee Solicitor

Every day in the family department is different which keeps my job exciting.

I attend meetings with clients, taking detailed instructions. Listening skills are key as family law clients can experience high levels of stress and emotional instability. I carry out legal research to understand the best approach to particular cases. I prepare and draft legal documents such as divorce applications, statements, bundles for hearings and other paperwork. Sometimes, I attend court hearings to assist counsel and the client and to take a detailed note of the proceedings.

One of the aspects I enjoy most about the job is the variety. While family law can be emotionally intense, I find it deeply rewarding to assist clients through such difficult times. Our clients can be at one of their most vulnerable times in their life, so it is vital to be as understanding as possible.
