From Student to Paralegal: How It All Began

Lilian’s journey with GN Law began while she was still a student completing her LPC. During a visit to the firm, she was introduced to our Mental Health Law department and offered work experience. From the outset, her potential stood out. Before long, she was invited to interview for a Mental Health Paralegal role, and once she completed her LPC, she officially joined the team. It was the start of a career path that would shape not only her professional development, but also the kind of solicitor she would become.

The Human Side of Law: Lessons from Mental Health Work

Beginning her legal career in Mental Health Law had a profound impact. Straight out of university, with no practical experience, Lilian Efstathiou found herself working closely with clients in some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. With the guidance and support of the team around her, she quickly learned how to manage files, communicate confidently, and, most importantly, approach every case with empathy. She learned to see the person behind the paperwork — not just a list of offences or medical notes, but a human being with a story.

“It taught me how to speak to people in crisis, listen to their stories, and be grounded in the reality of legal work.”

At university, Lilian had studied case law involving individuals whose mental health difficulties had contributed to criminal behaviour. At GN Law, those cases became real people. Meeting clients face to face gave her a deeper, more rounded understanding of the law in practice. That experience helped her develop the skills to advocate effectively for any client, by truly understanding their motivations, vulnerabilities, and needs. It grounded her in the reality of legal work and confirmed her commitment to representing individuals who cannot speak for themselves.

Finding Her Place: Joining the Court of Protection Team

It was this strong sense of purpose that ultimately led Lilian to the Court of Protection team. When she joined, the department consisted of just five people. Today, it has grown significantly, reflecting both the increasing demand for this work and GN Law’s commitment to investing in specialist teams and long-term careers. From the moment she joined, Lilian felt she had found where she belonged. The firm’s supportive culture, structured training, and collaborative approach allowed her to develop with confidence in a complex and demanding area of law.

“From the moment I began working in the Court of Protection team, I felt a real connection to the work. I knew that this was the area I wanted to qualify into. It has a genuine, tangible impact on people’s lives.”

Advocating for Those Who Cannot Speak for Themselves

Working in the Court of Protection means representing people who lack capacity and cannot advocate for themselves. The decisions made in these cases often shape every aspect of a person’s life. For Lilian, being able to safeguard their rights is both a responsibility and a privilege. The work is closely linked to human rights law and frequently involves highly complex, emotionally charged situations. GN Law’s emphasis on training, supervision, and team support ensures that solicitors are never facing these challenges alone.

A Case That Stayed With Her

One case that has stayed with her involved a young woman who had suffered a devastating accident and the responsible health body had made an application to withdraw clinically assisted nutrition and hydration and other life sustaining treatment. Lilian represented P’s mother who was adamant that her daughter should remain on life support. Advocating for the mother during such an overwhelming and painful time helped ensure her voice was heard and respected. Providing that support brought the family a sense of peace in the midst of profound difficulty.

Moments like these capture the true purpose of the work we do at GN Law: using the law to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

“To be able to safeguard those at their most vulnerable. It aligns so closely with the core principles of human rights, which is why this work means so much to me.”

Law as a Commitment, Not Just a Career

For Lilian, being a solicitor is more than a profession. It is a commitment to dignity, compassion, and justice for people who are too often overlooked or unheard. Her career reflects one of GN Law’s core values: fighting for the rights, dignity, and futures of those who need us most.
